< Historic London Market Wins National Award

Britain’s 2012 Hopefuls off to Market

On the 9th February 2011, Old Spitalfields Market, one of London’s most popular shopping destinations, will play host to a number of British athletes who hope to be competing in the London 2012 games – all demonstrating their sports of Volleyball, Fencing, Goalball and Handball.

The historic market hall will be transformed into a sports demonstration and participation arena for the day. Free to attend, members of the public are encouraged to come along from midday and be shown the skills required to play at international level, by the GB athletes themselves - and then test their new-found abilities in the participation area.

Ellie Barnatt, OSM events manager, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to try their hand at a new sport and to meet the athletes who will be representing Great Britain in 2012.”

“There is such a wide array of sporting talent in this country and we are delighted for this opportunity to showcase both Olympic and Paralympic sports - allowing the public to really get involved in the run-up to 2012. This will be the first in a series of such events that we will be hosting at Old Spitalfields Market, with many more taking place throughout 2011.

Grant Horan, co-founder of Sports-Experience.com, the activity and athlete providers, added: “This demonstration, at such an iconic venue, and being so close to the main sporting events of 2012, is great opportunity for schoolchildren, the public and local businesses to really feel part of what’s happening right on our doorstep.”

“This is the start of a more-substantial sporting campaign / concept that will be launched at Old Spitalfields Market during the summer. “

Richard Stacey-Chapman, technical administrator of Volleyball England, commented: “Volleyball England has previously worked alongside Sports-Experience.com to give thousands of people an experience of sitting volleyball.”

“This event will really help to raise the profile of the game with both the public and potential sponsors. Such fun activities in the eye-catching location of Old Market will provide us with the perfect setting to showcase volleyball.”

Members of the public who are interested in taking part should arrive at Old Spitalfields Market from midday on the 9th February 2011. Entrance to the free activities will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
